From what you describe, it sounds like its an issue with Final Cut Pro. FCP is highly temperamental and touchy. You might have a memory or RAM leak depending on what computer, OS, firmware, and versions of each software you have.
Run a quick software update, disk cleanup, and system optimizer. I use a 3rd party optimizer called System Optimizer X or "Socks" http://www.mkdsoftware.com/socks/) then restart.
If that doesn't work, it could be just a quirk of your software that you have to work around. Whenever I work with FCP, it insists on crashing whenever I try to do motion keyframes with text and pictures. Why? I think I will never know...

Whenever I got to export out of FCP, I use EXPORT USING COMPRESSOR. I get it all set up and start the process only to have FCP crash during the process. It is happening more often than not lately. I use to be able to at least do a short export, but today, not so much. So then what I do is just use export using QUICKTIME MOVIE and then take that into Compressor and all works well. It is just an extra step of compression that I was trying to avoid. Thanks for any input.
