Re: [MISP] Town Hall Topics Announced -- and this week in Las Cruces

***This is a MISP Listserv message. Responses are sent to the list by default.*** ***For more info about MISP and the listserv, scroll to the bottom of the page*** *

I forgot to include another special event in conjunction with the town hall this Thursday. From 10-11 that morning, the Learning Games Lab at NMSU is welcoming small tours of their operation. I'm excited about visiting -- hope to see a few of you there. What is the Learning Games Lab?

The Learning Games Lab is the research space for the development work done by the department. NMSU Media Productions creates educational media, including games, interactive websites, and video (DVD and web-delivered). TheLearning Games Lab was created as a place for games developers to test their games throughout development. Games consultants (youth and adults) come to the lab during the summer and school year to engage in learning about gamedevelopment, and to consult with developers on character design, usability, and level design of games.

Media Productions has recently completed "Science Pirates: the Curse of Brownbeard" a freely downloadable game for mid school science learners. It guides students through experiment design, including hypothesis formation and identification of variables. It is available at http://www.sciencepirates.org.

Currently, Media Productions faculty and staff are working on several projects, including short games and animations on math concepts for mid school students (some are already available at http://www.mathsnacks.org), several projects on food safety for different audiences, and a national exergames initiative through which they are research impacts and effects of games that encourage physical activity, and providing outreach information to program leaders who want to use exergames (more information at http://www.exergamesunlocked.org .
