A good discussion here. I'd like to observe, however, that a whole lot of what's being suggested here is already happening in insular capsules. For example, I've been attempting to attend as many "new media" conferences and lectures as "film" conferences lately. I find it useful as a Producer to know, in the world of the future, what's possible to accomplish and reasonable to expect and who to expect it from.
I have to admit that most of the new media stuff is so far over my head. I didn't have a clue what most of the folks were even talking about this past weekend. However, in the short time I spent at the conference, I learned that some of the new "wizardry" can accomplish some ends that mean something to me.
One example I'm referring to is the "banding" issue with 8 bit and 16 bit (huh?) hoopdidoop, but is easily corrected with 32 bit "magic wands". (The non technical quotes are from the voices in my head.) I don't have to know how to do it to know what it does and why it's important to me.
At this same conference, I heard another speaker discussing the same issue of "banding" with no apparent knowledge that this issue has been or can be resolved. So, if at a conference of new media wizards, the speakers don't know about what each other is doing, how can they possibly expect to know what's happening across media? This is only one example.
My whole point here is that I'm aware of a lot of the stuff being suggested in this conversation already in process, but there doesn't seem to be any central clearing house or even cooperation (unless it's this discussion) to get that information out to EVERYBODY. I keep hearing conversations about how to reinvent each other's wheels, but very little about a how to share the cart.
Maybe somebody smarter than me can devise a method of sharing this information.

We want to make sure our students have the tools to run a small business (gaming or digital media) and develop relationships with existing businesses so they have jobs to go to when they graduate. Interactive media is the future. I'd love to have a support system for small digital media/animation/gaming start-ups. There are some in my small community that have the creative abilities but not all the tools business wise to make it work well. I imagine this the same everywhere. If we had a support system they could turn to for help to make their business work and get their product to the customer. With interactive media, we have to think of new ways of training beyond film crew training. You don't need a huge crew to produce for the web. You don't need huge teams doing animation and gaming anymore. So much more is possible with a small team of dedicated people (cell phone apps, YouTube, etc.). I consider myself more of an artist than a business person so my business knowledge is more limited, that's why we'd need businesses involved to make this work. I know grant funders really like as many partnerships as possible so a mix of university and businesses would be great to make funding possible. If the funds are funneled through government/educational institutions then a technology transfer model should be put in place. On the business side we need a digital media business incubator approach. For companies further in their development financing options need to be available. The development of above the line should be the function of higher education and vocational trades should be the function of the unions. Just a few ideas. I said the Governor's Council does not have a budget. And Ed Angel has just pointed out that the funds that had once been available for MISP endeavors has been depleted to zero. So there is no DIRECT funding. As to there being some indirect sources of funding, that's always worth exploring. For one thing the SIC could provide investment funds for Digital Media related ventures. Remember the film office is under Economic Development and stimulus moneys could be used for such programs, i.e. A recent report underwritten by the McCune Foundation - "New Mexico Ecosystem"- made the following recommendation. #1: Nurture Highâ€Growth Potential Industry Clusters in Alternative Energy, Life Sciences and Digital Media. Investment capital will not flow into the state until NM shows a real commitment to developing Digital Media in supporting small and independent media businesses. Basically we have no budget. And with the State having even more of a shortfall than had been anticipated, I don't anticipate getting a budget any time soon. I don't know if MISP itself has a budget. Eric Whitmore can clarify that. I'm sure it goes without saying that not having a budget severely restricts what we can do on the Council. -- Carolyn Handler Miller, author of DIGITAL STORYTELLING, 2nd Edition Available at: _http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0240809599/digitalstoryt-20_ (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0240809599/digitalstoryt-20) website: _http://www.CarolynMiller.com_ (http:// www.carolynmiller.com/) Twitter: _http://twitter.com/CarolynHMiller_ (http://twitter.com/CarolynHMiller) Los Angeles: 323 661-3893 Santa Fe: 505 474-9648 cell: 323 459-7841 In a message dated 10/16/2009 5:15:18 P.M. I'm sure that's no surprise to anyone who knows me. I hope people are aware that there's a small group of us on the Governor's Council on Film and Media Industries who are pushing for more attention to be focused on this arena.
