NMWIF NOMINATING COMMITTEE FORMING:
The Board of Directors has appointed Angelique Midthunder to chair the Nominations Committee. We need a co-chair and NMWIF members to join Angelique on the committee. This committee's mandate is to identify and select qualified NMWIF members to run for the Board of Directors for our 2009-2010 year. A slate of nominees will be put forth at our General Meeting in February, 2009 and elections will take place at that meeting. Nominations will also be taken from the floor. NMWIF WRITERS GROUP – Starting Again in January 2009
The group meets every other Monday from 6-9PM in Santa Fe. Writers bring scenes from their work, which actors cold read followed by questions and feedback from the group. This is a workshop setting for the writers to hear their work read aloud and receive feedback to improve their work. It also allows actors the chance to practice cold read.
The group will start up again in January2009 at the Jean Cocteau Theatre at 418 Montezuma, Santa Fe. Date will be announced.

Taos Shortz Film Fest – Sponsorship Opportunity
The Taos Shortz Film Fest is dedicated to showing quality short films from around the world, by screening submissions and jury selections.

NEW MEXICO FILM INDUSTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP!!
A grass roots organization called "Film Industry Promotion Association" FIPA has been formed to help us maintain the film industry here in New Mexico.
The recent article in the New York Times makes it all the more clear that those of us involved in this industry need to make efforts ourselves to keep the Industry flourishing.

During the last few years, Governor Bill Richardson and the state legislature have developed and funded significant incentives to attract the film industry to New Mexico. These incentives have been hugely successful and New Mexico now boasts of an impressive infrastructure for the industry. Schools, facilities, trained crew, ancillary services, not to mention wonderful climate and beautiful locations have all made New Mexico one of the top filming centers in North America.
However, we are concerned that once again some state legislators are starting to lose their appreciation for the value the film industry brings to the state. In the last several months questions have been raised about the economics of continuing this successful program. Those of us in the industry and those in the communities where we work know how important the programs are to the tremendous job creation that has occurred since these programs have been in place. There are several industries including hotels and restaurants and service companies that share our enthusiasm for the continuation of the program.
For this reason we have formed the Film Industry Promotion Association (FIPA) to design and institute programs for collaboration and advocacy of the continuation of the state's successful program of industry attraction and support. Having met with state labor leaders, state government officials, guild members and concerned legislators and community leaders throughout the state we know that this initiative is critical. We have hired The Rutherford Group, LLC, a longstanding and well respected government relations firm, to develop and implement a plan of attack. We have set a budget of $56,000 for the first year of this effort, and now must raise the necessary funds to support this imperative goal.
The Film Industry Promotion Association (FIPA) is a grass-roots organization supported and funded by people like you; New Mexico filmmakers, writers, producers, talent agents, casting directors, production crew, actors, post production, stunt people, hotels, restaurants, realtors, travel agents and other businesses that benefit from the growing film industry in New Mexico.
We are asking every interested member to contribute $50 to this effort. We understand that for some $50 may not be possible but anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated as we need support for each and every one of you who benefits from the New Mexico film industry. For those of you that can contribute more than $50 we thank you in advance as we move more aggressively toward our goal. Consider how the industry has benefited you when considering your donation. NOTE: Legislative Session begins in JANUARY. We have a lot of work to do in 2.5 months!!

Basic qualifications: PhD in Communication with emphasis in an appropriate discipline, ability to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels, communication skills consistent with excellent teaching and advising abilities, as well as continuing engagement with developments in the field. The ideal candidate will have experience with broadcasting and media convergence, with the ability to teach in one or more of the following areas: broadcast production, sports communication, radio station operations. The Communication Center is a state-of-the art facility. Industry experience in either cable or broadcast is a plus. For candidates with appropriate experience, possible incoming appointment as department chair, with stipend and course release.

The Indian Arts Research Center – Fellowship submissions
January 15, 2009
The Indian Arts Research Center ( http://www.sarweb.org/iarc/iarc.htm ) in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is inviting Native and First Nations artists to apply for its upcoming fellowships.
The IARC fellowships were established to support Native American and First Nations artists at the Indian Arts Research Center at the School of Advanced Research (http://www.sarweb.org/ ) in any medium. The fellowships include a $3,000 per month stipend, housing, and a studio, as well as travel and material allowances.
Upcoming fellowships include the 2009 Eric and Barbara Dobkin, Fellowship for Native Women, a three-month fellowship from March 1 to May 31, 2008. Other fellowships are for all Native artists, and include the Ronald and Susan Dubin Fellowship (June 15 to August 15, 2008) and the Rollin and Mary Ella King Fellowship (September 1 to December 1, 2008).
Applications for the 2009 Dobkin Fellowship must be postmarked by December 1, 2008. Due to a revised application process, all fellowships after the 2009 Dobkin will have a single deadline of January 15, 2009.

EXPERIMENTS IN CINEMA V4.2
Experiments in Cinema V4.2 (a Basement Films production in collaboration with UNM's Department of Cinematic Arts) is currently seeking submissions for our 4th annual celebration of international, cinematic experimentation. This year's festival will take place in Albuquerque April 16-19, 2009. We encourage all moving image artists creating unembedded and undependent media to submit to our festival. Working Films – Content + Intent Documentary Institute
Now accepting applications for its five-day residency for documentary filmmakers at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA). The residency, which is called the Content + Intent Documentary Institute, will take place March 11-15, 2009 in North Adams, MA. Applications for admission to the Institute may be found online at www.workingfilms.org (or you can contact Anna Lee at alee@workingfilms.org). The application deadline is January 28, 2009.
The Content + Intent Documentary Institute will guide approximately eight filmmakers and advanced film students through the development of audience and community engagement plans for their film projects. Linking the documentaries-in-progress to organizations committed to progressive social change will be a key component of the Institute.
Participants will create an audience engagement plan for their films, identify potential community and non-profit partners, and develop first drafts of select support materials, including effective timelines, budgets, and implementation strategies. Working Films will offer insight on the development of web sites, fundraising tactics and press strategies. A two day film festival at MASS MoCA - featuring documentaries on social justice and environmental issues - runs concurrently with the Content + Intent Institute.
$500 enrollment fee to attend (some scholarships are available). Fee covers residency costs and materials, housing costs and some meals. Attendees will reside in MASS MoCA's artist housing which is within walking distance of the training site.

NMSU-GRANTS CREATIVE MEDIA
Seeking proposals for media related workshops in areas such as movie making (i.e. acting, directing, sound, camera, lighting) and other related industries (i.e. video games,
online marketing, web development). The ideal workshop would be hands-on
and interactive. For example, an acting workshop where actors work through
scenes or a sound workshop working with tools of the trade. We want to
avoid "chalk and talk" seminars. Presenters will receive a stipend and
hotel. The workshops will be presented during our 2nd Annual Change the
World Festival on April 17 and 18, 2009. Proposals are due by January 30,

the topic, description, format and length of your workshop.
UBUNTU FREE CULTURE SHOWCASE
The Ubuntu Free Culture Showcase is an opportunity to show off high quality free culture content in Ubuntu. At the heart of Ubuntu's ethos is a belief in showcasing free software and free culture, and with each development cycle we open the opportunity for any Free Culture artist to put their work in front of millions of Ubuntu users around the world. Although the space restrictions are tight, and we are limited to how much content we can include, this is an excellent opportunity for artists everywhere.
How it works is simple: Your submission must be no larger than 1MB for audio, 2.5MB for video and 0.5MB for photo/graphic, upload your submission somewhere online (there are lots of free hosting solutions available such as archive.org). Do not email any of the organizers or judges with your submissions, add your entry to one of the tables below, when the deadline for submissions closes, our panel of judges (Cory Kontros, Luis de Bethencourt, Luke Yelavich, Lydia Pintscher and Tony Whitmore) will pick a shortlist, and the Community Council will then pick the final winners from the shortlist.
The deadline for submissions is 6th February 2009.

The Frontera Pride Film Festival, EL PASO – Call for Submissions
Invites filmmakers to submit films for the June 2009 festival: Building Bridges Across Borders. This festival celebrates the creativity, connections, challenges, contradictions, and conundrums of borders in our lives. IE. Socially constructed borders, political borders, personal borders. Priority will be given to films that incorporate and explore issues of gender and sexual identity as they are lived and/or perceived.
Submit films in the following categories:
1. Narrative Short (40 minutes or less, fiction or non-fiction)
2. Documentary Short
3. Animated Short
4. Experimental
5. Narrative Feature
6. Documentary Feature
7. Music Video
-To qualify as a short your film must be 40 minutes or less.
- Experimental shorts are those without a narrative thread.
Do not send trailers or works in progress. Films has a better chance of being selected if Frontera Pride is able to review a finished product.
All submissions must be sent on DVD. Complete contact information must be included with each submission.
Submission price is $25 for shorts and $35 for features until February 16, 2009. At that time prices will increase to $35 for shorts and $45 for features until the final postmark deadline of March 16, 2009.
Applicants will be informed of the status of their project no later than April 30, 2009.

SIGGRAPH's Computer Animation Festival – Call for Submissions
The SIGGRAPH 2009 Computer Animation Festival CALL for Submissions are here!
The Computer Animation Festival is celebrating its 36th year as an internationally renowned forum for presentation of the world's most innovative and stimulating computer-generated animated films. The festival offers a wide spectrum of genres: narrative animation, medical visualizations, video game and simulations demonstrated in real-time, music videos, promotional spots, and many others can be seen in one location over the course of five days. If you can only attend one animation festival this year, SIGGRAPH 2009 is the must-see event. For its second year in a row, the festival is open to the general public in addition to conference attendees.
For the Computer Animation Festival's Multicultural Visualization/Representations call for submissions we are seeking works that showcase the wealth of cultures and diversity through the use of computer graphics. A unique medium that is able to reach beyond boarders, beyond languages to audiences, filmmakers, students and researchers worldwide.
You are also encouraged to submit a proposal for a Talk or a Panel about your work.
The festival presents both Competition Films and Invited Films. Invited films are selected by committee rather than by submission.
