Hi everyone...

Bit of a dust-up over on the MISP events list regarding a campaign related posting. Since this political season is likely to get a little more lively in the next few weeks, I'd ask listserv members to avoid advocating (on list) for particular candidates or campaigns and keep the list focused on media industry/community topics and issues. (I'll also make a quick mention of the Governor's Council on Film and Media Industries Town Hall this Saturday -- a good place to discuss all these issues. More info at: http://www.altmedianm.org/events.html And that the deadline for registration for this fall's election is during the first week of October!)

While we're at it... Please don't sell things on this list, and please keep events and other announcements on the events list (drop me a line at artslab@unm.edu and we'll subscribe you, unsubscribe you, or otherwise change your subscription).

While there are a good number of people who might agree with any one candidate, in this partisan environment any campaign-related post is also going to drive a bunch of people crazy. And off the list as well.

Another reason to avoid political content is that a good many people on these lists are subscribed from places like local and state government and the national labs -- and some of those institutions have prohibitions on political content.

So please, help keep campaigning off these lists, and keep discussions on topics and issues directly related to the film and media industries.

[MISP] New Mexico's Emmy Connection, Take II

Monica Winter Vigil rightly pointed out another Emmy connection I'd missed:

Jay Roach, director of the Austin Powers movies, is an Albuquerque native, and graduate of Eldorado High. He took honors the other night for "Recount"

After doing so nicely at the Oscar's it's good to see the NM connection continues to shine out in Hollywood.

Elsewhere Sunday, "Recount", a drama depicting the events following the 2000 election, won in the outstanding made for television movie category.

The film's director Jay Roach said he hoped this November's presidential poll would follow a different script.
"We don't want to go somewhere and do 'Recount 2: The Sequel'," Roach said.

[MISP] Locals win Emmys!

Between other events and the "Legal Hawks" premiere the other night, I missed out on that other show -- where two locals won Emmy's. Pretty incredible.

Of course, Bryan Cranston is only a part time New Mexican, but his support for the Duke City Shootout, humility in a bunch of interviews and knock-out performance in Breaking Bad are all good reasons to be proud he has a home in New Mexico.

From KRQE: NM-Based Breaking Bad Wins Emmy

LOS ANGELES (KRQE) - Sunday brought Emmy gold for the lead actor in the New Mexico-based television series "Breaking Bad."

Bryan Cranston won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmy for his portrayal of Walter White, a high-school chemistry teacher who turns to selling drugs to provide for his family.

The series on the cable channel AMC is set in New Mexico, and films around the state and at the Albuquerque Studios in Mesa del Sol.

The USA Network series "In Plain Sight," also set and filmed in New Mexico, was not eligible for this year's Emmy Awards because it was first broadcast on June 1, the day after the Emmys' May 31 cutoff date.

Even more pleasant news came when Santa Fe's Kirk Ellis was awarded an Emmy for writing the HBO miniseries, "John Adams." However, things got a little interesting -- Awards Daily has it from there...

...But while Don Rickles and Jimmy Kimmel got to ramble at length as if they were a pair of witty Poets Laureate, Kirk Ellis had barely stepped onstage before the Emmys gave him the hook:

The Emmy-winning writer for "John Adams" was ironically cut off by producers during his acceptance speech while talking about public oratory in Adams era, calling it "an amazing opportunity to talk about a period in our history when articulate men articulated complex thoughts in complete sentences."

Ellis attempted to continue: "They used words –" but the mic faded out in the middle of his sentence as ABC abruptly cut to commercial. Backstage Ellis was quick to hit back:

"I love freedom of expression and as soon as I opened my mouth they were signaling to wrap it up," Ellis says backstage. "I find it interesting we can do 30 minutes devoted to reality show hosts but none for the people who actually [write the shows]."

It will be great to have Terrence Hill back in NM. When I was 15, I was lucky enough to be on the set of My Name is Nobody. I got to spend some quality time with Terrance Hill and Henry Fonda. I also got to know one of the producers, Sergio, on a first name basis...literally. It was just a few years ago that I discovered that Sergio was THE Sergio Leone.

My Name is Nobody is widely considered to be the last Spaghetti Western and was shot on locations in Northern NM and in Southern NM which is where I had my wonderful experience.

Thanks Eric for bring back some great memories!

New Mexico seems to be having some continues success with these 'Westerns'... Appaloosa garnered some good reviews (Viggo Mortenson, Ed Harris and Renee Zellweger look pretty good with a New Mexico landscape) and 3:10 to Yuma did pretty nicely -- Luce Rains got a nice write-up in USA Today the other day too.

Good also to see local producers like Luca @ HDNM continuing to make good things happen...

Governor Bill Richardson Announces Italian production, Doc West, to be filmed in New Mexico

SANTA FE—Governor Bill Richardson today announced that the De Angelis Group/HDNM Entertainment production, Doc West, will shoot in New Mexico.

The production, a movie-of-the-week for Italian television, will be shot in and around Santa Fe from October 9th through December 6th and is expected to hire approximately 90 local crew members and over 200 actors, including principal and background talent.

Doc West will star Terence Hill (Lucky Luke, My Name is Nobody, They Call Me Trinity) and Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas, Dick Tracy). Giulio Base will direct, and Anselmo Parrinello and local Santa Fean Luca Ceccarelli will produce.

The movie tells the tale of Doc West who arrives in Holysand to hustle the locals at cards but finds himself caught between two warring families. Because of Doc's exceptional and entertaining abilities – gunslinging, prowess of wit, and secret past as a doctor – the Sheriff, an orphan boy and a beautiful, strong-minded school teacher want to keep him around, but that's going to be tough.

This marks the 108th major film production since Governor Richardson took office, adding close to $1.9 billion dollars in economic impact.

Governor's Council on Film and Media Industries to Hold Town Hall

SANTA FE – The Governor's Council on Film and Media Industries will host a Town Hall for New Mexico businesses, local governments, neighborhoods and any other interested parties to gather input on the future of the state's burgeoning film and media industries. The Town Hall will take place Saturday, September 27^th at the State Capitol Building.

"This is a great opportunity for the public to have input in updating the Governor's strategic plan for developing media opportunities and industries here in New Mexico," said Council Chairman Michael Kaye.

The Town Hall will focus on three areas: Education and Career Training for film and digital media; Impact on Communities - Location Concerns & Entrepreneurial Opportunities; and Incentives and Economic Impact.

Halflife* digital is proud to be the production company behind both "Time Assassins" and Cinnafilm's "Love Crash Heal" music video, which halflife's David Garcia lensed and directed. Thanks to the Golden West saloon, too, for allowing us to shoot there. David chose the location as an homage to the late, great venue's place in the history of the local music scene.

Support comes in many forms. Neither of these projects benefitted directly from state money (as far as I know), but it was our rate reductions and donations, both in the form of time and equipment, that made them possible. In support of Cinnafilm, Albuquerque's coolest home-grown technology company, halflife* digital donated the use of one of our new RED cameras and the resulting footage so Lance could run it through his magic box. We can't wait to see how the Cinnafilm process was able to blend it with the HD footage from our Panasonic HPX500.

Unfortunately, we won't be able to attend the screenings, as we have to take a trip back east for a shoot, but we'll be there in spirit, and hope everyone has a triumphant evening. And may everyone continue their support for each other. It's great to see the results.

Hi all...

So of course I want to discourage using this list for event announcements (more on that later) but the work that Trifecta +, A+1 and people like Lance are doing really does feel like it's making a difference. Folks like them and Billy Garberina (whose Necroville DVD gets some nice distribution later this month) are constantly working; producing consistently and getting their pieces out there. Along with the success of visiting production, their work -- and that of many others on this list -- is one of the things that'll keep moviemaking in New Mexico going strong.

Another thing is involvement in the process that helps support this production. I don't know that the folks above received direct support from the state, but the state's support for media certainly created the environment where all this could happen.

If you're interested in keeping that going, I URGE you to participate in the upcoming Governor's Council on Film and Media Industries Town Hall on September 27th in Santa Fe:

Dear list –

It's great to see the quality level of independent filmmaking rising here in the Duke City. I think it is important to note that independent filmmakers here are finally starting to "get it" – that is, their craft is improving so that they can actually compete at the higher levels and eventually turn a hobby into a career. For anyone keeping track, Cinnafilm is also making some headway – we are now shipping product! We hosted a SIGGRAPH party in downtown LA last month – I know Ed Angel came by for a little while, and I wanted to thank him along with the other NM folks who made time to swing by our event to see us. MicroFilmmaker magazine called our technology the "most amazing device at the show" (http://www.microfilmmaker.com/tipstrick/Issue34/MFMSIG_2.html), so I think we are doing something right.

BTW – not listed in the info below is the fact that we will also be screening a local band's new music video ("Love Crash Heal"). The band is Soular, they are becoming big in the music world. To prove to folks how amazing a production can look on a limited budget with Cinnafilm in its arsenal, we shot the music video on a budget under $3,000 in a single day using two cameras at the old Golden West – the vaunted RED and the Panasonic HPX500 – shot in 60p and 60i respectfully (versus 24). I then used my technology to reformat to true 24p and add a variety of beautiful film looks. So, if anyone out there doubts how good 60i digital video can look with Cinnafilm, come see this – you will be astonished. A comparable music video shot on film would be at least ten times the budget!

"Hide" to screen at "Legal Hawks" premiere this Sunday, Sept. 21

The latest Trifecta+ short film, Hide, written and directed by Scott Milder and starring Sequoia Adams Price and Ross Kelly, will hit the screen this Sunday, Sept. 21, at the KiMo Theater in downtown Albuquerque as part of the premiere of Legal Hawks, a new comedy pilot produced by A+1 Productions. Trifecta+ cinematographer Corey Weintraub was behind the camera for both projects, which were produced with help and crews from the Central New Mexico Community College Film Technician Training Program.

The event, which is being sponsored by the city of Albuquerque, will begin at 7 p.m. and is free of charge. Donations will go to help a local firefighter.

Local Filmmakers to Preview Independent Television Pilot

On September 21st, local Production Company A+#1 Productions will be previewing their independent television pilot "LEGAL HAWKS" at the historic KIMO theatre in downtown Albuquerque at 7pm.

The year is 1986 and a new television network called Fox is desperate for content. They approach the biggest hair band of the era, Von Holland, to do a weekly concert show. Von Holland decides instead to do a legal drama, and "Legal Hawks" the series is born.

"Legal Hawks" was written and directed by Josh Klein, and stars local actors Isaac Kappy and Ross Kelly. Also appearing in the show are Bill Sterchi, newcomer April Fox, Reuben Finkelstein, Shenoah Allen, Mark Chavez, David Kappy, and Victor Izay. The pilot was shot by local cinematographer Corey Weintraub. "Legal Hawks" was produced by Isaac Kappy.

Students from CNM's film training program worked alongside industry professionals during the making of the pilot. Much of the talent in front of and behind the camera are responsible for the 2007 National Film Challenge winning short film "Time Cougars".

The screening will be held on September 21st at 7pm at the KIMO theatre is free of charge and open to the public. However, the filmmakers will be using the event as a fundraiser for a Farmington fireman whose family is grappling with financial duress after medical complications that led to the loss of their unborn child.

Also showing at the screening will be the premiere of "Hide," the latest short film from Trifecta+ Entertainment, directed by Scott Milder, and "Time Assassins," a short film directed by Reuben Finkelstein.

For anyone keeping track, Cinnafilm is also making some headway – we are now shipping product! We hosted a SIGGRAPH party in downtown LA last month – I know Ed Angel came by for a little while, and I wanted to thank him along with the other NM folks who made time to swing by our event to see us. MicroFilmmaker magazine called our technology the “most amazing device at the show” (http://www.microfilmmaker.com/tipstrick/Issue34/MFMSIG_2.html), so I think we are doing something right.

BTW – not listed in the info below is the fact that we will also be screening a local band’s new music video (“Love Crash Heal”). The band is Soular, they are becoming big in the music world. To prove to folks how amazing a production can look on a limited budget with Cinnafilm in its arsenal, we shot the music video on a budget under $3,000 in a single day using two cameras at the old Golden West – the vaunted RED and the Panasonic HPX500 – shot in 60p and 60i respectfully (versus 24). I then used my technology to reformat to true 24p and add a variety of beautiful film looks. So, if anyone out there doubts how good 60i digital video can look with Cinnafilm, come see this – you will be astonished. A comparable music video shot on film would be at least ten times the budget!

"Hide" to screen at "Legal Hawks" premiere this Sunday, Sept. 21

The latest Trifecta+ short film, Hide, written and directed by Scott Milder and starring Sequoia Adams Price and Ross Kelly, will hit the screen this Sunday, Sept. 21, at the KiMo Theater in downtown Albuquerque as part of the premiere of Legal Hawks, a new comedy pilot produced by A+1 Productions. Trifecta+ cinematographer Corey Weintraub was behind the camera for both projects, which were produced with help and crews from the Central New Mexico Community College Film Technician Training Program.

The event, which is being sponsored by the city of Albuquerque, will begin at 7 p.m. and is free of charge. Donations will go to help a local firefighter.

Local Filmmakers to Preview Independent Television Pilot

On September 21st, local Production Company A+#1 Productions will be previewing their independent television pilot "LEGAL HAWKS" at the historic KIMO theatre in downtown Albuquerque at 7pm.

The year is 1986 and a new television network called Fox is desperate for content. They approach the biggest hair band of the era, Von Holland, to do a weekly concert show. Von Holland decides instead to do a legal drama, and "Legal Hawks" the series is born.

"Legal Hawks" was written and directed by Josh Klein, and stars local actors Isaac Kappy and Ross Kelly. Also appearing in the show are Bill Sterchi, newcomer April Fox, Reuben Finkelstein, Shenoah Allen, Mark Chavez, David Kappy, and Victor Izay. The pilot was shot by local cinematographer Corey Weintraub. "Legal Hawks" was produced by Isaac Kappy.

Students from CNM's film training program worked alongside industry professionals during the making of the pilot. Much of the talent in front of and behind the camera are responsible for the 2007 National Film Challenge winning short film "Time Cougars".

The screening will be held on September 21st at 7pm at the KIMO theatre is free of charge and open to the public. However, the filmmakers will be using the event as a fundraiser for a Farmington fireman whose family is grappling with financial duress after medical complications that led to the loss of their unborn child.

Also showing at the screening will be the premiere of "Hide," the latest short film from Trifecta+ Entertainment, directed by Scott Milder, and "Time Assassins," a short film directed by Reuben Finkelstein.

[MISP] Another Important Meeting

The village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque is holding a meeting at 7pm Tuesday Sept 9^th to discuss a continued ban on filming in the village. Obviously it's important that as many of us attend the meeting as possible to thank the village for their past support of the film industry and to work with them to come up with a sensible policy that would address our concerns and the concerns of the local residents.

The meeting is at the village hall which is just north of Chavez on Rio Grande Blvd. Those of you who may want to speak please arrive a few minutes early to sign up for a three minute slot. Remember, well dressed and articulate with a positive message has worked for us before, even if you are not planning to address to board.

There are a few exciting things going on in our local game development community, but one of the big new games that has the interest of gamers, scientists and educators alike is being released as I type... Any educators out there thinking about using Spore for something?

It's possible that Spore won't take over the world, but its imminent release has some of the geekier gameplayers worldwide pretty excited. You might be hearing more about this...

Playing God, the Home Game

What is the difference between a game and a toy? Does a game that feels more like a toy — even a scintillating, empowering toy — fall short on its own terms? Or is it enough just to be a great toy?

Those questions came to mind again and again as I spent more than 60 hours recently with Spore, the almost impossibly ambitious new brainchild of Will Wright. Best known for his popular evocations of urban sprawl (SimCity) and suburban Americana (The Sims), Mr. Wright has spent the last eight years trying to figure out how to convey the vast sweep of evolution from a single cell to the exploration of the galaxy as an interactive entertainment experience. His answer, Spore, is being released in stores and online for PCs and Macs in Europe on Friday and in North America this weekend...

Most important, The Sims is profoundly noncompetitive and open ended. The Sims is structured so you can help your family putter around the house forever. There are other families in the neighborhood to interact with, but they aren't trying to eat your children or burn your house down.

Spore, like real life, is largely about the survival of the fittest. In each stage your species either becomes dominant and evolves, or it becomes extinct (meaning you try over and over again until you "win"). In The Sims making a family dysfunctional is half the fun. In Spore a dysfunctional species basically loses the game. That competitive nature is one reason why, despite its cutesy looks, Spore is aimed both at adults and children. And that competitive aspect is why a relative dearth of rich and interesting play mechanics hurts Spore more than The Sims.
