ANNOUNCING OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS
The NMWIF Board is pleased to announce our two new board members, Cynthia Ruffin and Carmela Rappazzo. Cynthia, an actor/writer/director, will assume the office of Secretary for NMWIF and Carmela, a musician/composer/actor, will fill the final Director position on the newly expanded Board. In addition, member Mimi Moss has been selected to co-chair the new Committee of the Secretary, which will be chaired by Ms. Ruffin. We're excited to welcome the expertise and contributions of these dedicated professional women!

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT:
The Santa Fe Metaphysical Film Festival is looking for a part-time paid Celebrity Hostess to manage the celebrities who are attending the Festival. This job would require organizing their transportation to and from the airport and to and from the festival each day, making sure they are in the right place at the right time, attending to other needs they may have while they are in Santa Fe. Volunteers can help with this but we are looking for someone who can work fulltime for about two weeks before and during the festival.
Job requirements: Good organization and attendance to detail; friendly; experience working with celebrities; knowledge of the film business; punctual; own transportation; familiar with Santa Fe and environs.
We are also looking for an experienced salesperson to assist in fund-raising for the festival. This is a paid part-time position with 20% commission on the sale of sponsorships.
Job requirements: Extensive sales experience: knowledge of the film buisness and film festivals; outgoing; friendly; focused; available for concentrated hard work over the next two months.

NMWIF WRITERS GROUP
The Group meets every other Monday evening, from 6 to 9pm, in Santa Fe. Writers bring scenes from their work, which actors cold read, followed by questions and feedback from the group. This is a workshop setting, for the writers to hear their work aloud and receive feedback to improve their work. It also allows actors the chance to practice cold reads.

Thanks to the sponsorship of the Duke City Shootout, this is a FREE screening.
On the weekend of July 24, 26 teams competed to make the best short film in just 48 hours. This year the filmmakers had to use the following elements in their films: Prop: an automotive part, Character: Tom or Tina Walton, Receptionist and they all feature the line of dialogue: "I forgot we had this".
Now the results of the competition are in. The eleven 48 Hour films selected as the "Best of New Mexico, 2008" will be screened in association with the Duke City Shootout at the Best of the 48 Hour Film Project Screening and Awards Ceremony. The event will be held at the Hyatt Grand Ballroom on Friday, August 1, at 8pm. The event is free. After the screening, the winners will be announced. The New Mexico winning 2008 film will go on to compete against films from 69 other cities across the world for the best film of 2008. Last year the New Mexico winning team, Trifecta Plus, came in 3rd in the world and screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

The TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund will provide up to $140,000 in support of innovative and compelling filmmaking that explores scientific, mathematical, and technological themes and storylines, or a leading character who is a scientist, engineer, innovator or mathematician in fresh ways.
We are seeking exceptional narrative work of all genres (except science fiction or fantasy) with scientifically accurate themes or characters.
Selected projects from eligible directors, screenwriters and producers will be announced in Fall 2008 and highlighted at the Tribeca Film Festival in May 2009. In addition to funding, grantees will receive professional guidance and industry exposure as needed.

We've seen the potential effect of politics on our film (and tech media) industry -- and are likely to see some of those effects again. Regardless of your party affiliation, I'd remind you that those who get involved early and make their voices heard can really have influence, particularly in New Mexico, where access is remarkably open.
The Association of Commerce and Industry's business perspective might make these forums interesting -- and the business of media and its positive impact throughout New Mexico is something we want our legislators to understand.

The Association of Commerce & Industry of New Mexico, along with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, will host a series of candidate forums on business issues.
On August 4, Daniel East, Ben Ray Lujan Jr. and Carol Miller, candidates for the Third Congressional District, will be in Santa Fe at the Forum Building at the College of Santa Fe from 5 to 7 p.m.
The same candidates are slated to appear at a forum on August 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Clovis Civic Center.
On August 7, Democrat Harry Teague and Republican Edward Tinsley, running in the Second Congressional District, are slated to appear at the Good Samaritan Society at Las Cruces Village in Las Cruces from 5 to 7 p.m.
And on August 22, Democrat Martin Heinrich and Republican Darren White, running for the First Congressional District, are scheduled to appear from 11 to 1 p.m. at the Marriott Pyramid North in Albuquerque.
U.S. Representatives Steve Pearce, R-NM, and Tom Udall, D-NM, have been invited to attend the forums as well. They are running for the seat held by U.S. Senator Pete Domenici, R-NM.
Other partnering organizations on the forums include Women Impacting Public Policy, the Northern New Mexico and the Southwest Borderland Las Cruces-El Paso Chapters of the National Association of Women Business Owners, the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce, the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Las Cruces. Governor Richardson announces Call for Proposals for third round of "New Visions/New Mexico" Contract Awards
New Mexico-based filmmakers eligible to receive contracts up to $20,000 –

The New Mexico State Fair Art Department is looking for one or two
artists who are willing to participate in our 2008 art show. Although
the piece can not be entered for contest, it will still be showcase to
be admired by thousands of people. We are specifically looking for a
small art film with duration of no more than 10 minutes. The content
of the film is open, but we kindly ask for the film to be suitable for
the entire family since the State Fair is a family oriented event. The
idea is to promote cinematic arts as part of the art fair. The main
purpose is to showcase moving images as a hint to what may possibly
happen next year. Also, the pieces will be showcase in the side of
some galleries for everybody's enjoyment. As of this year, a category
for moving images is not part of our annual juried show, but we hope
that with your participation we can get the management of the fair, as
well as the community in general, to understand the importance of film
as part of the local arts.
Please feel free to send me an e-mail if you may have any questions
concerning this matter. The art fair is from September 7 to the 21.
We were hoping to receive proposals ASAP for some of the staff to
preview the features.

The First Annual Santa Fe Metaphysical Film Festival - September 18 - 21 - will be an opportunity for filmmakers and film-lovers to come together to share a journey into the world of spirit and the supernatural through the rich medium of film. The brainchild of screenwriter and Santa Fe resident Carolyn Cobelo, this four day festival will offer a showcase for talented film makers who are committed to making cutting edge films that explore cross cultural understanding and higher consciousness. It will also be a festival for film-lovers who want to step into a movie house and experience the wonders of spirit and beyond.
There will be a juried sacred art market offering paintings, sculpture, jewelry, music and clothing.
Opening and closing ceremonies will celebrate spirit through dance, ritual and music. There will be themed networking cocktail parties each evening, a Festival Gala, and an awards ceremony.

PROFESSIONAL GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP:
The Grant Institute's Grants 101: Professional Grant Proposal Writing Workshop will be held in Las Cruces, New Mexico, October 15 - 17, 2008 from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
The Grant Institute's Grants 101 course is an intensive and detailed introduction to the process, structure, and skill of professional proposal writing. This course is characterized by its ability to act as a thorough overview, introduction, and refresher at the same time. In this course, participants will learn the entire proposal writing process and complete the course with a solid understanding of not only the ideal proposal structure, but a holistic understanding of the essential factors, which determine whether or not a program gets funded. Through the completion of interactive exercises and activities, participants will complement expert lectures by putting proven techniques into practice. This course is designed for both the beginner looking for a thorough introduction and the intermediate looking for a refresher course that will strengthen their grant acquisition skills. This class, simply put, is designed to get results by creating professional grant proposal writers.
Participants will become competent program planning and proposal writing professionals after successful completion of the Grants 101 course. In three active and informative days, students will be exposed to the art of successful grant writing practices, and led on a journey that ends with a masterful grant proposal.

Our eyes, our hearts, our memory, remember the laughter, revolts, angers, fantasies of women filmmakers worldwide that came to share and celebrate in images our 30 years of Festival.
The concept of border reacts to more subtle, more hidden, even invisible and discriminatory effects. The largest geographical border runs over 8893 km between the United States and Canada. The smallest, 3km, which separates the Vatican from the rest of Italy? But what about the invisible borders between cultures; between us and others?
Our 2009 program guideline will be political and will be articulated on a parallel between the United States of Europe and the United States of America with a 30 film program coming from both continents and a large brainstorming Forum on the impact of cultural diversity throughout cinema made by women. This section will feature images of rich intercultural communities on both continents in order to point out new borders and explore all new film styles.
A special night featuring female cinema of gender films will bring together police, fantastic and science fiction, erotic films or even vampire horror movies made by women.
The surprise Self-portrait of an American actress shows our will to invite most outstanding professional and talented personalities. Why not? Isabella Rossellini (lets cross our fingers)! Didn't she just make "porno green" film for cell phones! New: 2nd European WFFN network meeting (Women Filmmaker's International), with the special edition of a book focused on women filmmakers specificity including 30 portraits of filmmakers discovered at Creteil.
