[MISP] Mi Voz Season 3 - The Zia's Heart: FREE ABOVE THE LINE PRODUCTION CLASSES OF MIDDLE SCHOOLERS!

PLEASE SEE ATTACHED FLIER!

We can only select 12 young people ages 11-14.  They have to do an on-camera interview on any of the audition dates (October 8th & 9th – 3:30 – 5:30PM).  They must attend every session – there will be 2 a week from 4 – 5:30 for 16 weeks.  At the end they will have a completed short documentary that they have done entirely on their own.  It requires strict dedication, much like what is required to get your child in school sports, and a minimum of a 2.5 GPA is required to keep them enrolled.

This season’s theme is New Mexican art and artists.  They will profile or showcase an artist who does their work out of New Mexico, and hopefully redefine what a New Mexican artist is for a new generation.

You can see our myspace page at www.myspace.com/mi_voz and view our students’ works at www.youtube.com/user/ydimivoz.  Any other questions, feel free to call or email me.

[MISP] Job Announcements, Call for Extras/Entries, etc.

***This is a MISP Listserv message. Responses are sent to the list by default.*** ***For more info about MISP and the listserv, scroll to the bottom of the page*** *

Hi again...

After a busy summer, it looks like an even busier fall with classes getting back in session and state-wide film and TV production cranking along.

We don't do job announcements (or events) on this main discussion list, but I wanted to remind everyone that both can be done on the Events and Announcements listserv (misp-events-l@list.unm.edu).  And since there's no one freely available service for media jobs, I'd encourage you to send those there.  It seems we're actually in pretty good shape for getting the word out on extras casting and jobs in film and TV production, but for multimedia jobs... it's a little sparse.

I've included some options below, but if you have suggestions -- or know sites we've missed -- please send them along.

(much of this below was sent earlier -- with a few updates)

Daniel and the folks at Crew New Mexico are open/happy to post information about upcoming events, auditions, festival info, call for entries, job openings, breaking news, call for extras, etc. on the http://www.crewnewmexico.com website. (Some services cost a subscription fee)

I've also found Mandy.com pretty effective (the free sign-up allows posting of limited numbers of jobs and events)

Film New Mexico site (not affiliated with the NM Film Office) regularly posts news and info about what's going on here in New Mexico:  http://www.filmnewmexico.com/

The NM Adobe Users Group has a variety of forums, but also hosts the NM Creatives Job Board at: http://jobs.nmaug.com/

For calendars of events there are, as you know, several. Personally, I'd urge you to check and post events (particularly larger ones) to the statewide economic development calendar (http://www.edcalendar.org/).

Of course, we try to share news for discussion here at the MISP listserv, and share info on events statewide on the MISP-Events listserv (drop us a line at artslab@unm.edu for more info), but I post most of the news and events I hear of at two blog sites:
http://nm-media.blogspot.com (jobs, events and announcements)
http://nm-medianews.blogspot.com (news)
A Google group also captures the MISP postings and provides additional info at http://groups.google.com/group/nm-media-industries

The official sites at the NM and City/Regional Film Offices are all well worth checking out as well (and on a regular basis).
The State Film Office Bulletin Board (http://www.nmfilm.com/locals/) is, I find, particularly useful, as is the City of Albuquerque's Film News site

If you have other sites worth checking out, please share.

And best wishes for the weekend!

[MISP] iTunes Store Apps Update

***This is a MISP Listserv message. Responses are sent to the list by default.*** ***For more info about MISP and the listserv, scroll to the bottom of the page*** *
Hey everyone...
Image representing iPhone as depicted in Crunc...Image via CrunchBase, source unknown

A few positive life changes and the wrap-up of this year's Duke City Shootout have taken a bit of time lately, but as summer winds up and the school year begins to begin... things are good.

One of the best recent experiences I've had (in addition to the Shootout) is the opportunity to work with two classes at The Art Center Design College as part of efforts to promote the next NM Media Industries Conference (January 16th and 17th, don't miss it). Hearing pitches from their Marketing and Graphic Design classes, it was really heartwarming to see the effort and creativity each student applied -- and their interest in helping grow New Mexico's Media Industries. I look forward to the opportunity to share some of their work -- and to see more of what our film and media students are doing statewide.

But... about iPhones and application development. O'Reilly Radar has an update on the kinds of applications being put up for sale, and it's great information. Additionally, I think we're seeing one of the first nearly market-wide releases of software to the general public; by enabling such a wide range of application developers access to a wide channel of fairly early adopters, I think Apple has done a really good thing for software developers.

It's also something I think media-makers (whether its movies, music, games or other software) should be thinking about -- what can the distribution models in one industry learn from another?

But, in the meantime, here's the word from O'Reilly Radar:

The U.S. iTunes App Store

With the iTunes App store now over a month old, I decided to look closely at data from the U.S. store over the last three weeks. While sales numbers are not publicly available, Apple publishes overall as well as category-level rankings. There are currently just over 1,800 (paid and free) applications in the App store, double what it was three weeks ago. Games is the largest category with about 500 applications (roughly 27% of all apps), up 87% from three weeks ago. Puzzles, Arcade, and Board games are the three largest Gaming subcategories:

pathint

The fastest-growing category, Education, more than tripled over the last three weeks.

The average price per paid app is around $5.50, with 94% of apps priced at $10 or less. Prices vary considerably by category with expensive apps skewing the average price in a category: a single application priced at $449 drove up the average price of Finance apps to more than $22. Excluding the top and bottom 1% priced apps, the average price of an iPhone application is about $5.20. Similarly, by removing the top and bottom priced app in each category, we get a more reasonable estimate of the average price per app within a category (click here for details).

I will be in the area. I would DEFINITELY love to attend
this event. However I am not able to register as I do not
own any Autodesk software (but I will when I can afford
it, and will also be using it in some of my fall semester
classes). I'd like to check out anything that is free or
open to the public. If anybody is NOT attending any one
of the events, let me know. Maybe I can borrow a badge or
something. I'm kinda going on short notice. I'm an
undergraduate of UNM CFA photo, interested in animation
and video editing. I work in the Law School Media Center
with Diego Romero and Tony Anderson (you can ask them how
much of an easy-going guy I am ;p) If anyone can help me
out or would like to go to the beach or lunch or
something, get at me with an email.

Thanks for the heads up , Eric.

3D animation instructor, Aaron Barreras and myself with be attending functions and manning the Art Center booth part time. Becky Wible-Searles, our new College Dean, will be helping to coordinate the Fjorg! competition. We also have a student, Sean Coleman, competing in the Fjorg! "Iron Animator" competition and another on the Fjorg committee as a volunteer. We are having a pre-Siggraph "Animation Gathering" at the Art Center, Friday 08/08/08 from 3pm to 5pm to help get in the "mood."

I believe the Art Center Design College booth is a 10 x 20, pretty much smack dab in the middle of the exhibit hall. Anyone attending is welcomed to stop by and harass us. Representatives from our Tucson campus will also be tag teaming the booth, so feel free to introduce yourselves to them. I have told them all about everyone associated with AniMotion NM and the film industry here in the Land of Enchantment.

I hope to see you all there!

Hey everyone...

Apparently SIGGRAPH is next week.  A few of us here in the ARTS Lab extended family will be out in LA for all that, and we were wondering whether anyone else from NM is headed that way and might like to meet up at some point.  I know the Cinnafilm team will be out there -- anyone else?

Best wishes,

Eric

ASSN OF COMMERCE & INDUSTRY HOSTS CANDIDATE FORUMS ON BUSINESS ISSUES:

This item from member Eric Renz-Whitmore:

We've seen the potential effect of politics on our film (and tech media) industry -- and are likely to see some of those effects again. Regardless of your party affiliation, I'd remind you that those who get involved early and make their voices heard can really have influence, particularly in New Mexico, where access is remarkably open.

The Association of Commerce and Industry's business perspective might make these forums interesting -- and the business of media and its positive impact throughout New Mexico is something we want our legislators to understand.

From the NM Business Weekly:
The Association of Commerce & Industry of New Mexico, along with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, will host a series of candidate forums on business issues.

On August 7, Democrat Harry Teague and Republican Edward Tinsley, running in the Second Congressional District, are slated to appear at the Good Samaritan Society at Las Cruces Village in Las Cruces from 5 to 7 p.m.

And on August 22, Democrat Martin Heinrich and Republican Darren White, running for the First Congressional District, are scheduled to appear from 11 to 1 p.m. at the Marriott Pyramid North in Albuquerque.

U.S. Representatives Steve Pearce, R-NM, and Tom Udall, D-NM, have been invited to attend the forums as well. They are running for the seat held by U.S. Senator Pete Domenici, R-NM.

Other partnering organizations on the forums include Women Impacting Public Policy, the Northern New Mexico and the Southwest Borderland Las Cruces-El Paso Chapters of the National Association of Women Business Owners, the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce, the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Las Cruces.   Space is limited and registration is required for the events. SHOW YOUR FILM AT THIS YEAR'S STATE FAIR:
For further information: babelortega@yahoo.com

The New Mexico State Fair Art Department is looking for one or two
artists who are willing to participate in our 2008 art show.  Although
the piece can not be entered for contest, it will still be showcase to
be admired by thousands of people.  We are specifically looking for a
small art film with duration of no more than 10 minutes.  The content
of the film is open, but we kindly ask for the film to be suitable for
the entire family since the State Fair is a family oriented event.  The
idea is to promote cinematic arts as part of the art fair.  The main
purpose is to showcase moving images as a hint to what may possibly
happen next year.  Also, the pieces will be showcase in the side of
some galleries for everybody's enjoyment.  As of this year, a category
for moving images is not part of our annual juried show, but we hope
that with your participation we can get the management of the fair, as
well as the community in general, to understand the importance of film
as part of the local arts.

Please feel free to send me an e-mail if you may have any questions
concerning this matter.  The art fair is from September 7 to the 21.
We were hoping to receive proposals ASAP for some of the staff to
preview the features.

FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE FILMES DE FEMMES DE CRETEIL – CALL FOR ENTRIES

Member Mary Lance sent us this information:

I thought you might want to list this call for entries from the French film festival Films des Femmes in the newsletter. It's a great festival. This year, the topic is Invisible Borders.

Thanks a lot for a great newsletter!

31e Festival International de Films de Femmes de Créteil et Val de Marne
13-22 mars 2009

HOW TO SUBMIT: www.filmsdefemmes.com.

THEME:  "Invisible Borders"

150 films
50 VIP guests
Surprise self-portrait! a well known American actress will be our guest star
A special night featuring female cinema of gender films

Our eyes, our hearts, our memory, remember the laughter, revolts, angers, fantasies of women filmmakers worldwide that came to share and celebrate in images our 30 years of Festival.

The concept of border reacts to more subtle, more hidden, even invisible and discriminatory effects. The largest geographical border runs over 8893 km between the United States and Canada. The smallest, 3km, which separates the Vatican from the rest of Italy? But what about the invisible borders between cultures; between us and others?
Our 2009 program guideline will be political and will be articulated on a parallel between the United States of Europe and the United States of America with a 30 film program coming from both continents and a large brainstorming Forum on the impact of cultural diversity throughout cinema made by women. This section will feature images of rich intercultural communities on both continents in order to point out new borders and explore all new film styles.
A special night featuring female cinema of gender films will bring together police, fantastic and science fiction, erotic films or even vampire horror movies made by women.

The surprise Self-portrait of an American actress shows our will to invite most outstanding professional and talented personalities. Why not? Isabella Rossellini (lets cross our fingers)! Didn't she just make "porno green" film for cell phones! New: 2nd European WFFN network meeting (Women Filmmaker's International), with the special edition of a book focused on women filmmakers specificity including 30 portraits of filmmakers discovered at Creteil.
Lots of History, memory, territorial issues and you will just love it!

Come to where it makes a difference!
